Live data (also called PIDs -- Parameter IDs) is real-time sensor information streamed from your car's computer through the OBD2 port. While your car is running, the ECM/PCM reads hundreds of sensors and calculates operating parameters. An OBD2 scanner can display these values as numbers, gauges, or graphs.
Every OBD2-compliant vehicle (1996+ in the US) supports a standard set of PIDs. Enhanced or manufacturer-specific PIDs give access to much more data but require software that supports your specific make.

Shows how much the PCM is adjusting fuel delivery right now to maintain the ideal 14.7:1 air-fuel ratio.
The learned correction the PCM applies over time. If STFT consistently has to add fuel, LTFT will move in that direction as a permanent adjustment.
If both banks show similar trims, the problem is shared (fuel pressure, MAF sensor). If one bank is off and the other is normal, the problem is bank-specific (vacuum leak on one side, injector issue, exhaust leak near an O2 sensor).

A contaminated MAF reads low, causing lean fuel trims and P0171. Clean it with MAF cleaner spray ($8) before replacing it ($50-$150).
Should be close to ambient temperature at startup, rising slightly during driving. If IAT is reading significantly higher than ambient at cold start, the sensor or its wiring has a problem.
Idle should be steady at 650-850 RPM (varies by vehicle). Hunting idle (RPM bouncing up and down) indicates a vacuum leak, dirty throttle body, or IAC valve issue.
Should read 0-2% at idle and increase smoothly to 100% at wide-open throttle. Dead spots, jumps, or erratic readings indicate a failing TPS -- common cause of hesitation and surging.
Numbers are hard to read in real time. Always use graph mode when monitoring sensors that change quickly (O2 sensors, fuel trims, RPM). Graphs make patterns visible that numbers hide.
Don't look at one PID in isolation. The diagnostic power comes from comparing:

Record fuel pressure, MAF, and TPS during a test drive. When the stall happens, the recording shows which parameter dropped out -- fuel pressure crash (pump dying), MAF signal dropout (wiring issue), or TPS glitch (dead spot).
