What Is Ford PATS?

PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) is Ford's immobilizer system. It's been standard on nearly every Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury vehicle since 1996. The system works by embedding a small transponder chip in each key. When you turn the ignition (or press the start button), the instrument cluster reads the transponder ID and checks it against a list of authorized keys stored in its memory.

If the key matches, the instrument cluster sends an encrypted "go ahead" signal to the PCM, and the engine starts. If it doesn't match -- or if there's a communication failure -- the theft light flashes and the engine cranks but won't fire.

There are three generations of PATS:

PATS I (1996-1999)

The original system. Uses a fixed transponder code in the key. Key programming requires a parameter reset of the PCM. Found on Mustang, Explorer, Mountaineer, and early F-150 models. Limited to 8 keys maximum.

PATS II (2000-2007)

Upgraded with rolling encryption between the instrument cluster and PCM. The key transponder is still passive (no battery), but the security protocol is more sophisticated. PATS III (2008+)

The Incode/Outcode Problem

  4. If the incode is correct, the system enters learning mode and accepts new keys
  5. Each new key is inserted, turned, and its transponder ID is learned

How to Program a Ford Key with ScanFixAI

The exact procedure depends on how many working keys you currently have.

If You Have 2 Working Keys (Self-Learn Method)

This is the easiest method and doesn't require any tools at all. Ford built a backup key learning procedure into PATS II and III vehicles:

  1. Insert the first working key and turn to RUN (don't start). Wait 5 seconds.
  2. Turn to OFF and remove the key within 5 seconds.
  3. Insert the second working key and turn to RUN within 10 seconds. Wait 5 seconds.
  4. Turn to OFF and remove the key within 5 seconds.
  5. Insert the NEW key and turn to RUN within 10 seconds.
  6. The theft light will illuminate solid for 3 seconds, then turn off. The key is now learned.

If You Have 0 or 1 Working Key (Incode Method)
